Over the past ten years, my journey in content and communications led me through unexpected industries, weaving a career path more diverse than I could have ever anticipated. I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve gained over the last decade, and I’m also hoping people interested in learning about where my true expertise lies will read this note so I can contextualize my journey. I use AI for a lot of things, but I didn’t use it for this! I guess you’ll just have to trust me. I didn’t use any em dashes, for what it’s worth.

I started my career like many editorially-minded individuals do: in freelance. Right after my bachelor’s degree in biology, I built a roster of freelance clients, including Labroots.com and Skinnyms.com; I also worked part-time at the North Carolina Research Campus. At this time I was also working on a master’s degree in English with a focus on scientific writing. I spent three years freelancing my way through grad school, and while I’ve been working full time ever since, my scrappy, learn-on-the-go-to-keep-things-moving approach to work has been a constant theme for the duration of my career journey.

My tenure at Standard Process, a nutrition supplement company, marked a pivotal chapter in my professional journey. Though my role evolved with two promotions over five years, my experience at this company is defined by the time I spent growing their digital educational brand, WholisticMatters.com. When I left Standard Process, I was managing multiple agency contracts, freelance writers and designers, and a small in-house editorial team. Here’s some stats.

My content strategy for WholisticMatters.com did this:
+ increased organic traffic by 95% in 2020, 245% in 2021, 15.8% in 2022, and 13.6% in 2023
+ grew referring domains by 772.5% (40 to 349 over 5 years)
+ grew domain rating by 88% (25 to 47 over 5 years)
+ grew podcast streams from 0 to 1,200/month (over 5 years)

I left Standard Process to join the Three Ships portfolio. In my first year, I was hyper-focused on standing up editorial operations for Stacksphere, a performance marketing start-up. In late 2024, as the SERPs began to change with the influence of AI and Google’s ever-changing algorithms, I transitioned from my role with Stacksphere to Guardian Service, drastically broadening my scope in the process.

At Guardian Service, I’m building the brand’s digital presence in the home and auto insurance industry. So far I’ve been owning the strategy for organic performance, digital PR growth, and customer-facing communications. Here’s what I’m excited about from my first few months:

+ Used AI and automation tools to create a self-operating process that reduces build time for insurance sales presentations by 92%

+ Grew domain rating (DR) on Guardianservice.com from 0 to 14 in 6 months with both external (agency)-driven data journalism campaigns and internal, locally-targeted campaigns
+ Referring domains from 11 to 106 (864% growth)

+ Grew average Map Rank from 20.6 to 1.68 in 10 weeks with a focus on Google Business Profile optimization and growth of Google reviews

In 2024, I also completed a master’s degree in nutrition with a focus on infant feeding, inspired by my work thus far plus the birth of my children in 2022 and 2024. I’m continuing to pursue my passion for nutrition and infant feeding in my free time, including working with the editorial board of the Journal of Human Lactation. I’m always eager to connect with fellow professionals who share my enthusiasm – either for performance-driven content operations or for nutrition and lactation – or both.

My Management Style

My approach to management – and teamwork in general – is to be as open and transparent as possible. I’m looking for ways to get things done, and done well – avoiding red tape instead of seeking it out. I manage my own list of priorities and expect my team to prioritize as well.

My goal in a professional environment is to make the hours we spend in our jobs maximally productive and fulfilling. That being said, I’m also passionate about a healthy work-life balance, for myself and my team. I believe that making time for life outside of “the office” (in quotes here since so many of us work remotely these days) helps us be more effective, efficient, and focused when we’re working.
